Jeff Brosseau Named 2026 New England Lefty Gomez Regional Volunteer of the Year

2026 Baseball & Softball Rule Changes Announced

Donald W Clarke named 2025 New England Lefty Gomez Regional Volunteer of the Year

The late Vernon “Lefty” Gomez was one of Babe Ruth League’s most dedicated volunteers.  One of the reasons he was so committed to the program was because he witnessed firsthand the positive impact Babe Ruth League had on its young participants.

Beginning with the 2023 season, Babe Ruth League, Inc. introduced the first “Lefty Gomez Volunteer of the Year” Regional Award Winner Program.  Each year, the eight Babe Ruth League Regional Commissioners will select one volunteer from their region, who has gone above and beyond to promote and further develop the Babe Ruth League program, to receive this prestigious award.

Donald Clarke of Hudson New Hampshire, was selected by New England Regional Commissioner Barry Jordan as the 2025 recipient.

Jordan said, “The Lefty Gomez Volunteer of the Year Award is among the highest honors to be bestowed upon a regional volunteer.  Its recipient must embody the spirit of the Babe Ruth League philosophy, which is to provide the best possible sports experience for every child wanting to play.  Don admirably and enthusiastically exemplifies this philosophy.”

Don got involved with the Babe Ruth program in 1983 at the urging of his wife in order to be more involved with the activities of his 4 sons.  He started as the manager of his son’s team.  Not long after his role expanded to league president a position that he held for 10 years.

In 1988 Don added the position of District Commissioner to his league president duties, serving as District Commissioner until 1993.

After serving as District Commissioner, he served as Tournament Director for Babe Ruth State (3 tournaments) and Regional (15 tournaments) Tournaments in New Hampshire and New England from 1994 until 2012.

Don assumed the role of New Hampshire Babe Ruth State Commissioner in 1997, he continues in this role with 2025 being his 28th year.

Don was appointed Assistant Regional Commissioner for Babe Ruth Baseball in 2012, he continues in this role with 2025 being his 13th year.

In 2011 Don established the New Hampshire Babe Ruth Hall of Fame.

As Babe Ruth enters the digital age Don has been at the forefront of the technology.  Don is the New England lead for managing State and Regional Tournaments using the Tourney Machine Tool.  He has standardized the configuration of the tournaments.  Sets them up annually then provides access and technical support as needed.

When Babe Ruth decided to transition its league management software to Sports Engine Don again stepped up becoming the New England “expert” in league setup, background checking, registration, rostering, and websites

Don took the lead in consolidating the New England State websites into the Regional website creating a single source of information in a standardized look and feel.

Don was elected to the New England Babe Ruth Hall of Fame in 2014.

For more than  42 years, Don has work tirelessly to provide positive support, advice, and guidance to youth participating on Babe Ruth teams and adults supporting the organization throughout the New England Region.  He is well respected throughout the communities that he serves and has helped develop Babe Ruth League, locally, statewide, regionally, and nationally

Babe Ruth League, Inc. is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to developing better citizens by providing properly supervised baseball and softball competition for 4 through 18-year-old players.  It is the basic intent of Babe Ruth League that every player who has a desire to play the sport is allowed to participate and have fun.

Rosemary Matanes

December 14, 1947 - November 6, 2025 (age 77)
Rosemary (Dodge) Matanes passed away on Thursday, November 6th, due to complications from Alzheimer’s dementia. She was 77 years old. Rosemary, or Rosie as she was called, grew up in Dorchester, and was one of 5 siblings along with Albert, Thomas, Murial, and Florence Dodge. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1965. Following her marriage to Mark Matanes in 1972 she moved to South Boston, and finally to Canton in 1975. She was also a graduate of Boston State College, class of 1969, where she graduated with a degree in secondary education.

Rose began teaching math in the Boston Public Schools in 1970. What followed was a 35-year distinguished career which also included becoming a ‘Special Education’ teacher, and finally as a city-wide Evaluation Team Leader, whose job it was to provide valuable education services to Boston’s disadvantaged and handicapped children.

Rosie didn’t stop there however. She also became the Babe Ruth New England Commissioner for girls’ softball and quickly established herself as a superb organizer. After just 3 short years she was elected to the National Babe Ruth Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions.

Rosemary’s most significant accomplishment however, and the light of her life, were her children, Mark and Sara, and her six grandchildren, Finn Oisin, Sabhbh, and Aidan Matanes (from Ireland) and Addison, Grace, and Caleb Chafkin from Norfolk, MA. Spending time with all the kids in Disney World each year was her greatest enjoyment.

Rosie was a compassionate and loving individual who attended Victory Church in Sharon, MA. It was at Victory that she found true joy and happiness serving as a church secretary, treasurer, a prayer warrior, and a volunteer who would help everyone and anyone, at any time of need. She was truly a rare and unique individual whose love of family, friends, and her Savior provided her with an amazing life-long legacy. She leaves behind her husband Mark of 53 years who views her life as nothing short of a gift from God. She will surely be missed by all that knew her.

Christine Jordan

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and friend, Christine E. Jordan.

Christine, 71, of Sebago, Maine, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 26, 2025. She was born on January 11, 1954, in North Conway, New Hampshire, to Beverly and Merle Harmon. Christine fought a courageous battle with cancer, and her love, strength, and faith touched all who knew her.

Christine graduated from Lake Region High School and went on to work at Blue Cross and Blue Shield before joining the Lake Region School District, where she devoted 29 years in the cafeteria. She was well known for her baking—especially her famous whoopie pies—and retired in 2020. Beyond her work, she gave generously of her time, volunteering with the Parent Teacher Association and local baseball teams.

She had a passion for knitting and shared her gift by creating beautiful hats for family and friends. Christine loved road trips, exploring National Parks, and most of all, spending time with her family. Her grandchildren were her world, and it was rare to see her without them by her side.

Christine is survived by her husband, Barry, with whom she recently celebrated 49 years of marriage; her son Brian and granddaughters Jenna and Sophie; her daughter Kelly and husband Kevin, and grandsons Jordan and Jackson; her sister Nancy Thompson and husband Tommy; her sister-in-law Diana Manner and husband Jim; her niece Amanda and husband Adam; nephews Jason, Andy and partner Heather, Karl and partner Bethanii, and Kurt and partner Jordana; as well as great-nieces Addie and Natalie and great-nephew Asa.

She was predeceased by her parents, Beverly and Merle, and her sister, Sandra.

Christine’s wishes were for a private family service.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.

Remembering "Butch" Lamotta
